The Akron Zips men’s basketball team opened their 2025–26 season in impressive fashion, defeating the James Madison Dukes 85–71 on Monday night at James A. Rhodes Arena. After trailing 39–30 at halftime, the Zips stormed back with a dominant 55-point second half, fueled by tough defense and efficient shooting. Akron forced 19 turnovers while committing just eight of their own, turning the game around with relentless pressure and timely three-point shooting.
Amani Lyles led the charge with a career-high 22 points, eight rebounds, and four blocks, while Shammah Scott added 17 and Tavari Johnson chipped in 14. For JMU, Justin McBride and Cliff Davis each scored 14. The comeback win showcased Akron’s resilience and balance—an early statement that the Zips could be a serious force in the Mid-American Conference this season.
